The value of Proficient Negotiation Skills
What is negotiating? Negotiation is a procedure when two or more folks, Representing themselves, their organizations, or their countries come together and try to arrive at a mutually agreeable decision that benefits all the parties. There is no specific time length that a negotiation can take.

forms of Negotiations

There are different sorts of negotiations depending on the circumstances. When both the events are substantially benefited immediately after a negotiation, the discussions take on a more integrative and pleasant path. There are other negotiations the place both the parties look for different outcomes. In this case, the persuasive tactics are used for influencing the outcome. Here the negotiations are distributive and maximum benefits may not be derived.

How to Prepare For a Negotiation

Whenever a negotiation is on the cards, it is a good idea to prepare for it. Be apparent about what you want to negotiate. Be obvious about your objectives. It pays to make a study as to how a favorable outcome for you would influence the other party. Would it be effective for them? Also get to know what the opposition is aiming at. What is it that they want out of the discussions? It is easier to steer the negotiations if these facts are known.

It is important that you know what you possess that the other wants so badly. Answers to the following questions may make it easier to prepare for the discussions.

• What can be given away?
• What are the alternatives available?
• What has been the romantic relationship amongst the two of you? Will it influence the course of the negotiations?
• What are the resources available?
• What is the bearing that the outcome will have on you? On the opposition?
• Are there any hidden agendas? concerns?

The Art of Negotiation

It is important to focus on the approach and not on the outcome. It is important to note that negotiation is not between two people by yourself. It can sometimes contain several customers of the concerned two parties. The single most important factor for a negotiation to be successful is the communication of your wants effectively in a manner that appeals to the opposition as well.

Your ability to influence and control are of paramount importance for a successful negotiation. This skill is designed over a period of time. Some tips to develop these abilitys are the following:

• Listen more and talk less
• Do not argue
• Know your game
• Develop an intention to help your partner
• Develop principles of honesty and integrity
• Improve communication abilitys including tonality of speech and vocabulary
• Develop a good body language
• often think long term
• Know your limits
• Be flexible and do not be pushy
• Maintain diplomacy
• Develop quick thinking and be creative
• Have control over emotions, but be sensitive to the other’s requirements

Negotiations fail primarily because of difficulties relating to personality, honesty, time, perceived threats and difficulties, etc.
To negotiate successfully in the future, some relevant points that will help are to understand from others, self improvement, risk failure and discover through mistakes, and constantly think win-win.
